*Generally, documents are edited or proofed in Microsoft Word or a pdf editor. Upon request, work can be done on hard copy, rather than electronically. Also, edits can be made on paper and transposed to a client’s electronic file.

Apples and Oranges

A document may go through several separate edits--or just a couple--before publication. “Copyediting” and “proofreading” aren’t interchangeable terms. What’s the difference? Generally, at least one copyedit happens before a document reaches the design stage. When I copyedit, I work with a text that has been completely written, but has not yet undergone any special page layout. Proofreading happens after a document has been designed (or “typeset”). Proofreading is the last line of defense before a document is published.
